Wisdom Teeth — Why Do We Have Them?

Wisdom tooth extractions are a common oral procedure; it is performed millions of times each year. In fact, it is carried out so frequently that it is almost regarded as a rite of passage for teens and young adults. Since wisdom tooth removal is so common, it is only natural to wonder why we have these teeth in the first place! The answer goes back to ancient human ancestors.

The Reason behind Wisdom Teeth

The most widely accepted theory about wisdom teeth has to do with the rough diet of humanity’s earliest ancestors. They consumed a lot of things like seeds, nuts, and tough meats. As you can imagine, constantly eating such foods could be hard on the teeth! By the time they reached their late teens or early 20s, their existing teeth may have already been in poor condition. A third set of molars — what is commonly referred to as the wisdom teeth — may have been necessary to allow them to continue eating raw and chewy foods.

How Wisdom Teeth Became Obsolete

As the centuries marched past, humans developed new ways to process and prepare foods. They also invented simple eating utensils. These advancements made it much easier for humans to eat food — and things became easier on their teeth as well! Having a third set of molars became unnecessary for survival.

Wisdom Teeth in Modern Times

In recent centuries, human bodies have continued to adapt to changing conditions. In fact, some people nowadays never develop any wisdom teeth at all! In the future, humankind may reach the point where wisdom teeth are a rarity rather than a foregone conclusion.

Today, though, most people do develop wisdom teeth. Unfortunately, there is usually not enough space in the mouth to accommodate them. That is why these teeth are notorious for causing oral health complications, such as cysts, infections, and pain. Removing them is often the best way to address and/or prevent such issues.

Wisdom teeth may not be necessary, but they are certainly interesting! If you want to know whether you have these teeth or if they should be removed, consult with a qualified dental professional.
