After getting your wisdom teeth removed, your body will go through a recovery period. During that time, you should be sure to get enough rest. However, sleeping might be a bit challenging, especially if you are experiencing swelling and soreness. How can you sleep safely and comfortably after wisdom tooth extractions? This blog post provides some helpful tips.

Keep Your Head Elevated

Your head should remain elevated above your heart, even when you are lying down. This can help to reduce blood flow to the treatment area and keep swelling to a minimum. Prop your head up on pillows so it stays elevated. Some people find it easier to sleep on their side when their head has to be at a higher level than usual.

Have Someone Check on You

During the first part of your recovery, you might be directed to bite on some gauze. Because it poses a choking hazard, you should only fall asleep with the gauze in your mouth if a responsible adult is nearby. They should monitor you and check on your gauze every 20 minutes or so.

Manage Your Discomfort

It is fine to take appropriate doses of pain medication after your procedure. Some people receive a prescription from their dentist for pain relief, while others choose to use ibuprofen or another over-the-counter option. Use these medications as directed so you can avoid accidentally taking too much.

Apply Ice

Cold temperatures can reduce swelling and dull discomfort. You can apply a cold compress to your face for 20 minutes or so as you are preparing to sleep. Do not fall asleep while the ice is on your skin; overexposure can cause damage.

Make Sure Your Environment Is Comfortable

You may have to talk to your family members and request that they try to be as quiet as possible when you are trying to rest. It can also be helpful to make sure that your sleeping environment is clean and at a comfortable temperature. Tidying up before your procedure can allow you to come home to a welcoming environment that is conducive to rest.

Call Your Dentist if You Have Concerns

If your discomfort reaches the level where it is impossible for you to sleep, or you have other concerns about how your body is healing, do not hesitate to reach out to your dentist. Describe the situation, and they will advise you on your next steps.
