A beautiful and confident smile is a desirable trait, and services from a cosmetic dentist can certainly help you feel better about the appearance of your teeth and gums. Before they get to work on your smile makeover, however, they will need to consider several important aesthetic components of your appearance. Based on their analysis, they can design a treatment program that is tailored to your unique situation. Just what will they need to take into account? This blog post explains.
Tooth Color
Most people would readily say that teeth should be white. However, that is an oversimplification of the matter. If your teeth are too white, they may look unnatural or flashy. At the same time, they should not be noticeably yellow or dark. Your dentist can use whitening treatments, veneers, or other services to make sure your teeth are a color that is both attractive and complementary for your unique features.
Tooth Size and Shape
Short, worn-down teeth can make you appear older than you really are, whereas overly large teeth may call too much attention to themselves. The shape of your teeth is also important; certain shapes may lend themselves to a more masculine or feminine appearance. Your dentist may be able to use veneers or other techniques to make your teeth the right size and shape for your aesthetic goals.
Overall Proportions
Ideally, no more than a few millimeters of gum tissue should be visible when you smile. If more than that is visible, you have something called a “gummy smile.” You might need a procedure known as gum recontouring to remove excess gum tissue, which can make your teeth appear longer and improve the overall proportions of your smile. Or, if a lot of gum tissue is visible due to an upper lip that retracts too far, BOTOX might be able to limit the lip’s movement and thereby enhance your appearance.
Alignment
Things like an overbite, crooked or tilted teeth, or other alignment issues can interfere with your smile’s natural beauty. Also, the midline of your smile should be lined up with the midline of your face, meaning that it should be a straight line from the middle of your nose to the space between your two front incisors. If the alignment of your smile is not ideal, you may need Invisalign or braces to correct it.
Your dentist is both an artist and a scientist! They will consider all relevant aspects of your smile before putting together your custom cosmetic treatment plan.
